Quaker Meetings

Share

As someone who became a member of a traditional Quaker meeting 40 years ago, I don’t know whether to be appalled or amused by the concept of a “rock group” Quaker service (“A Glitzy Spin to a Gentle Faith,” Aug. 17).

Most of the people interviewed seem to have no idea of what Quakerism is about. For example, the senior pastor of one Friends church is quoted as saying, “People are not going to go and just sit and look at each other for hours.” He misses the point of silent worship, which is to look inside oneself. And by the way, a true Quaker meeting has no pastor, senior or otherwise.
