Former Library to Open as Community Center

A largely abandoned building that once housed the local library is coming back to life as a community center.

“We’ve had a number of meetings with the community regarding use of the former library,” said Niki Tennant, spokeswoman for Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, who helped initiate the conversion with a $75,000 city grant.

As a result of the meetings, the Vera Davis McClendon Center, scheduled to open in September, will include computer courses as well as classes in construction and tile design. It will also include programs fostering adult literacy, immigration outreach and naturalization education, she said.

The Venice library was located in the building at 767 California Ave. until it moved to another site two years ago.

The center is intended in part to provide constructive alternatives for at-risk youths, she said.
