Babyface’s prospects as a movie producer won’t be clear until his “Soul Food” hits the screen Sept. 26. But his track record with music made it a cinch for him to pull together big names for the film’s soundtrack, with new songs from Boyz II Men, Milestone (in which Babyface is a member), Total, Xscape, Tony Toni Tone and a duet from Monica and Usher. The album is due Sept. 16. . . .
In testimony to Oasis’ mega-band status, London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has recorded an album of the group’s music. That kind of treatment is usually reserved for such veterans as the Rolling Stones, Genesis or Pink Floyd. The album is due Oct. 21 from the budget-priced Music Club label. . . .
Aretha Franklin is working on a new song with Lauryn Hill of the Fugees, who wrote the track and will perform on it. Franklin’s upcoming album, due before Christmas, will also feature songs produced by Sean “Puffy” Combs and Dallas Austin. . . .
With their debut album, “Spice,” still in the Top 10, the Spice Girls will release another one Nov. 4. It will include music from their debut movie, which premieres in January. . . .
The Monkees’ Davy Jones is making a cameo appearance in a video for the song “I Want to Be Your Davy Jones” by indie New York band Sore Thumb. Jones got hooked up with the band after his manager read about the song in a Monkees fanzine.
