Taxes Needed to Thwart Developers
* I empathize with protesters who wrote Aug. 17 against proposed development of Crystal Cove as a high-priced resort. However, where is the public will to pay taxes to support our parks, schools, sewer maintenance, etc.?
Starting with Proposition 13 in 1978, many government-funded services have shrunk to levels which inconvenience us; some are at near dangerous levels.
The real culprits in our current sorry state of affairs are the ballot measures to limit taxation, whose backers were able to convince citizens to vote their pocketbook without enough information to assess the full impact.
Misguided self-interest must give way to a greater appreciation of the necessity for paying enough taxes to support community and statewide services, which enhance the health, safety and quality of life for all members of our communities.
Without sufficient public funds, all future projects will be farmed out to developers while we wonder what happened to our environment.
