Where’s the Justice in Justice System?
It is a time of remorse as the media highlight the death of another law enforcement officer. Then there is the farewell and some will take time to pay their respects. But life must go on and we soon forget about the person who lost a life in upholding the laws of our land while protecting and serving our society.
This I can understand. What I cannot accept is the system of justice, of which the deceased were an integral part, that uses lenient application of our penalties for taking the life of another. Should the shooter be apprehended, tried and convicted, we are reluctant to mete the appropriate ultimate sentence.
However, should the system so prescribe the ultimate penalty, the appeals process is lengthy and leniency is highly probable. In the interim, the culprit is revered by his fellow inmates as they again take note that consequences are minimal and life for them goes on.
