Irvine Valley College is offering computer classes for senior citizens beginning this week.

Computer Fundamentals and Applications will be on from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays starting today and from 9 a.m. to noon Fridays beginning this Friday. The one-unit course and mandatory health fee cost $24.

Computer Fundamentals introduces basic computer operation and covers instruction in Word for Windows 95. This class is intended for older adults who have no computer background.

Spreadsheet and Database, a second class, is offered Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. . This class is a step-by-step introduction to the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program and Quicken personal finance software. This 1.5-unit course costs $30.50.

All course work can be completed in class using IBM-compatible machines, and owning a computer is not a prerequisite. Through personalized attention, instructor Cathleen Schamp attempts to help students overcome their fears of computing.

“The class is geared toward seniors, but all age groups are welcome,” she said.

The courses are not for college credit. Students can apply at the Admissions and Records office, 5550 Irvine Center Drive.
