Principal Placed on Leave Over Unsanitary Restrooms

Centennial High School Principal Carrie Allen was escorted from campus by school officials after being placed on administrative leave because of alleged unsanitary conditions in bathrooms on the campus.

Allen, named Centennial’s principal in 1995, said she was dumbfounded when she was told Monday to gather her belongings and was escorted off campus.

“I’m devastated because I put my heart and soul into that school,” said Allen, a Compton resident. “I thought I could make a difference.”

Centennial’s new principal, Todd Irving, refused to comment on the situation Tuesday. Compton Unified School District officials said only that Allen would be offered a job as a French language teacher at a Compton high school. Allen said she would not take the teaching job, calling it an “affront.”

A letter that Allen received Monday signed by E. LaVonne Johnson, the assistant superintendent of school operations, alleged that the school’s bathrooms were in poor condition and held Allen responsible for providing the students with a clean and safe school.
