‘Caribbean’ Sails in Uninhibited Seas

Share

You’ll laugh a lot, but be prepared to cover your aft while watching “Butt Pirates of the Caribbean” drop anchor at West Hollywood’s LunaPark.

Having achieved camp cult status of sorts in its previous Santa Monica digs, this bawdy enema of a musical from Deadpanhandlers enthusiastically purges every morsel of taste with scatological satire centered on lusty buccaneers, distressed damsels and the code of the sea.

Up-tempo songs and unprintable lyrics by Philip McNiven employ an incongruously airy wit reminiscent of Gilbert & Sullivan to expose the privy portions of the pirate’s life, the parts somehow omitted in more family-oriented theme-park attractions. All in the spirit of scientific accuracy, naturally--these song-slinging seamen had bodily functions too, and the uninhibited 12-member troupe is determined to plumb their briny depths.

The stalwart hero Diego Del Fuego Winnebago Leggoamyeggo Smith (Rick Beadle) gives merry chase across the Seven Seas when the nefarious pirate Capt. Sweet Cheeks (McNiven) and his cutthroats abduct Diego’s beloved drag queen sweetheart (Wade Kelley). Gamely tagging along with the otherwise all-male cast is Meleney Humphrey as the fishmonger’s tarty daughter, who harbors a secret yen to dock Diego in her harbor without the customary yen. How this fulsome foursome resolves itself bolsters the old saw that there’s someone for everyone--provided they’re prepared to lower their standards (and their breeches). If you like your humor straight from Davy Jones’ locker room, this is the show for you.
