Arts Center Proposed for Former Library Site
In an effort to put the old Manhattan Heights Library building to use, city officials have planned a presentation and public meeting tonight to discuss placing a proposed cultural arts center on the site.
The city purchased the building from the county in 1995 when the library--the smaller of two located in Manhattan Beach--closed as part of cutbacks by Los Angeles County Public Library system.
City officials proposed expanding the building for use as a cultural arts center with a 100-seat theater, exhibit space and classrooms, but many residents worried that the site was too small for such a facility, said Jim Wolfe, director of the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department.
Plans to build a cultural arts center were put on hold in April. Wolfe said tonight’s meeting will include a presentation of the proposed cultural arts center and a public discussion about the plan.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at City Hall at 1400 Highland Ave.
