Safety Net at Course’s 13th Hole Rejected

The Planning Commission has voted not to permit a large safety net near the 13th hole of San Juan Hills Golf Course, but some residents say they will fight the decision.

“The Planning Commission voted for aesthetics over safety,” said Cheryl Carson, a mother of three who contends that her husband is the only family member who hasn’t been hit by flying golf balls.

In June, golf course owners began installing poles to hold the netting. They proceeded without a city permit because the San Juan Hills Homeowners Assn. had complained on behalf of at least eight neighbors who were hurt by errant golf balls. Some reported broken windows, one resident was hit in the face, another in the chest.

The commissioners halted work after residents whose homes are directly behind the hole complained that the 30-foot-tall, 163-foot-long net would block their view.

Rick Parillo, manager of San Juan Golf Inc., said his company has planted about 350 trees in an effort to block the balls. The company doesn’t plan to appeal the commission’s decision.
