Farmers Market Gets Council Backing

Calling it good for downtown, City Council members Tuesday said they would continue supporting the Fullerton farmers market, a Thursday night event from April through October that features fruits, vegetables and entertainment.

Joe Felz, a city community service supervisor, said the market’s goal is to increase pedestrian traffic downtown. He said the market is funded by $34,000 from booth and farmers’ fees and $15,000 in Redevelopment Department funds, which are used to promote the weekly event.

The market “is another one of those special events in Fullerton that enhances the quality of life here,” Councilwoman Jan M. Flory said.

For the 1998 market run, organizers are planning to increase children’s activities and include more food vendors.

In addition, city officials are discussing health codes with the county in an effort to make it easier for restaurants to sell their food at the market.

Currently, health codes allow only pushcart vendors and nonprofit organizations to sell food at the event.
