Shoppers nationwide expect to spend $1,233 this holiday season, up 6% from $1,160 last year, according to an annual survey by American Express. Westerners will spend less than those in the South and Northeast, forking out an average of $1,114 for gifts, entertaining, travel and decorations. Holiday shopping data for the Western region:
* About 80% plan to shop at department stores, 63% at discount department stores, 63% at clothing stores, 61% at music/video stores and 55% at bookstores.
* Educational toys are most likely to be given to children as gifts this year. Barbie and Nintendo video games also top shoppers’ lists.
* The 21% of Westerners planning to buy their boss a gift this year will dole out $27 on average, versus $47 nationally.
* About 28% will shop by catalog and 7% plan to shop online.
