Officials to Discuss Rocketdyne Cleanup
Water officials will discuss any effects the mercurial El Nino might have on the Rocketdyne cleanup at a public meeting Tuesday night.
The meeting will be hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency and will include representatives from the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and Rocketdyne.
People who attended a previous EPA meeting had requested the Tuesday session, fearing heavy rainfall could wash chemical and nuclear contaminants downhill.
Rocketdyne is engaged in a $55-million cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Lab, a 2,668-acre open-air lab outside Simi Valley. It was the site of nuclear research between the 1950s and 1980s and has long been used for rocket-engine tests.
For years, Rocketdyne critics have believed that chemicals and radiation from “the Hill” have caused illnesses such as cancer among neighbors. The state health department has taken preliminary steps toward studying that contention, which Rocketdyne officials vehemently deny.
The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Simi Valley Senior Citizen Center, 3900 Avenida Simi.
