School Board Plans Third Try at Bond Measure

For the third time in less than a year, the Torrance Unified School District board will ask voters to pass an $80.5-million school bond measure to fix the district’s aging school buildings.

The board voted Monday night to place the bond measure on the April ballot. Attempts to pass the same bond last June and November failed because it did not receive a two-thirds majority. The bond received “yes” votes of 57% in June and 62% in November.

District officials said that after getting closer in November, they hope the third attempt will be successful. Officials said they plan a big push to get voters to the polls and will encourage all parents to vote for the bond.

“We’re going to be much more intense this time,” said Heidi Ashcraft, a school board member. “Without this bond our children and the teachers will continue to suffer. These buildings need to be fixed so that they’ll last into the next century.”
