A new exhibition mounted to coincide with the 1998 Super Bowl opens Saturday at the San Diego Museum of Art. “Box Scores . . . and Much More: The Art of the Sports Page” includes more than 60 original works created for the print media that date from 1859 and celebrate boxers, golfers and ball players of every field.

Betye Saar explores metaphysical, cultural and identity issues in her mixed-media exhibition “Ritual and Remembrance / Personal Icons,” opening at the California African-American Museum. Saar’s assemblages are inspired by a variety of sources, including magic, mystical art forms and belief systems, folklore and her African American heritage. They incorporate found objects such as feathers, fans and shells with the traditional art media of painting and photographs.

Jacques Doillon’s French film “Ponette” is one of the most sensitive, luminous films ever made about the very young, and it deals superbly with the complex and contradictory impact of death on a 4-year-old girl (the amazing Victoire Thivisol), who refuses to believe her mother won’t be returning after a car accident.

RatFink, the infamous rodent with attitude, celebrates his 35th birthday at the 1997 RatFink Reunion in Santa Fe Springs. RatFink’s creator, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, designer and comics artist of “Kustom Kulture” fame, will attend the birthday bash, along with other artists. Black Shadows, the Eliminators, Blazin Haley and the Hot Rod Trio are scheduled to perform, an auction is planned, and food and RatFink memorabilia will be sold throughout the day.
