The Maple Leafs outshot the Pacific Division-leading Colorado Avalanche, 53-19, at Toronto on Wednesday night, but with Colorado’s Patrick Roy at his best, all the Maple Leafs got for their effort was a 2-2 tie.

“It was a great hockey game,” Toronto center Steve Sullivan said. “We fired the puck all night at Roy, but he made some great saves.”

In fact, the Maple Leafs needed a third-period goal from Tie Domi to salvage the tie.

“They worked hard. Of course they deserved to win,” Roy said.

The tie extended Toronto’s unbeaten streak to a season-high three games.

Igor Korolev also scored for Toronto. Rene Corbet and Stephane Yelle scored for Colorado.

“It’s nice to give the fans here a game,” Toronto Coach Mike Murphy said. “It has been three years since they’ve seen that kind of effort.”

Montreal 4, St. Louis 3--Vincent Damphousse scored 55 seconds into overtime to cap the Canadiens’ rally from a 3-0 third-period deficit for the victory over the Blues at Montreal.
