Heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. succeeded in its long-rumored quest to purchase the VarityPerkins diesel engines business of London-based LucasVarity with a $1.3-billion cash deal. . . . Teledesic co-founder Craig McCaw, 48, will take a more hands-on role in running the company that is building an “Internet in the sky,” as he resumes the job of chief executive. In a management reshuffle, McCaw, who is chairman, will share chief executive duties with Steve Hooper, 44, a longtime McCaw associate. The current chief executive, David Twyver, 51, will join those two on a three-member executive committee of the Teledesic board.
