Council to Take Legal Action to Buy 2 Motels

A council majority agreed this week to begin legal action to buy two Harbor Boulevard motels, despite pleas opposing the move from one of the property owners.
The city’s Redevelopment Agency is seeking the Harbor Boulevard properties, between Chapman and Orangewood avenues, to make way for a Hilton Garden, Hampton Inn and Suites and Embassy Suites.
In approving the legal action, city officials took the first step needed to force the sale of the Cavalier Inn and the Angels Inn. The city has apparently reached a sale agreement with owners of the Pitcarin Inn.
Trish Pham, owner of the Cavalier Inn for the last 10 years, pleaded with council members to postpone the action and allow her time to seek her own appraisal.
Councilman Bob Dinsen voted against the legal action, accusing his council colleagues of “having little respect for the private ownership of land.”
