Council to Consider Term-Limit Options

Share

Term limits for elected officials will be considered Tuesday by the City Council.

Options include limiting City Council terms to two consecutive four-year terms or restricting service to eight years total.

A measure to limit terms would have to be put before voters for approval, and the council could decide to place the measure on the November 1998 ballot.

About 20 years ago, the council adopted term limits but could not enforce the measure due to restrictions under state law. But with changes in the law, the city can now adopt term limits, providing voters approve the measure.
