Preparing for Winter Storms to Be Discussed

The Westlake Village City Council will join representatives of area homeowner associations Tuesday to discuss disaster preparedness in anticipation of winter storms.

The public meeting will feature presentations by local fire and sheriff’s officials, as well as the city’s Disaster Response Team.

“Overall, we don’t have the tremendous problems some other cities are faced with,” said City Engineer John Knipe.

“But in a heavy downpour, streets can get flooded with up to three or four inches of water as it travels down to the drains.”

He added that the city has several channels and bodies of water that may be enticing to children and teenagers but would become dangerous as heavy rains make them difficult to control.

The meeting will focus on distinct areas of the city--including the mobile home park, First Neighborhood and other developments--and such potential problems as mudslides as well as precautions that residents should take to safeguard their homes.

Tuesday’s meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 4373 Park Terrace Drive.
