CHESTER, S.C. — Police used tear gas Sunday to end an all-night standoff on Interstate 77 with a robbery suspect and found his claim to be holding a hostage was false.
Bill Long of the Greensboro, N.C., area, was taken to a hospital with a cut on his neck that may have been self-inflicted, said State Law Enforcement Division Chief Robert Stewart.
Long was believed to have robbed a restaurant Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.
The standoff at a highway rest stop forced closure of the highway for eight miles in both directions.
