Separate Housing for Recruits Proposed

An independent panel set up after an Army sexual-harassment scandal has recommended that the military begin housing male and female recruits in separate barracks, defense officials said Monday.

The 11-member commission, headed by former Republican Sen. Nancy Kassebaum-Baker of Kansas, also calls for more sophisticated training of young men and women aimed at ending discrimination against women in the military, the officials said.

But the officials, who asked not to be identified, stressed that the separate housing of recruits in small units would not preclude their training together in larger units, generally the current practice of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Only the Marine Corps now houses and trains women separately.
