Supervisors OK Funding for Parks Along L.A. River

The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a $4.16-million plan to help build parks and greenbelts along the Los Angeles River.
With money from a 1992 county parks proposition, the board gave the go-ahead to six projects designed to help transform the concrete-lined waterway into a recreational corridor.
The new parks and landscaped bike paths fall within the district of Supervisor Gloria Molina, whose staff worked with local cities to apply for the funding.
The money will help transform an industrial site in Maywood into a new park at the water’s edge and create gateways to the river in Bell.
Most of the projects require additional funding from cities, which plan to seek state and federal grants.
Additional parks may be funded next year when the board distributes $12 million from a 1996 county parks proposition.
