Town Council Opposes Escalon School Expansion
- Share via
The Altadena Town Council has voted against a Head Start school’s attempt to expand its facilities and quadruple class size in the wake of complaints from residents in the surrounding historic neighborhood.
Under the proposal, the former Escalon School in the 500 block of East Mendocino Street, would expand from about 125 students to 400 and include parking for increased staff.
Neighbors at a standing-room-only Town Council meeting Tuesday night complained of increased traffic and the loss of old buildings in a neighborhood they hope to place on the state historic register.
The 10-1 vote against the proposal is advisory only. Because Altadena is unincorporated, the County Regional Planning Commission has the final say.
