School District Puts Employee on Leave

A 21-year veteran of the Simi Valley school district has been placed on paid administrative leave, and a panel will decide by Jan. 6 whether he will keep his job.

Simi Valley Unified School District’s three-member Personnel Commission met Thursday as part of its investigative process to decide what to do with John Absmeier, longtime director of classified personnel, according to Alan Coyle, president of the nonteaching employees union.

Coyle said he did not know the exact charges against Absmeier, except that there were some “lack of communication issues.”

But Coyle said he was surprised to learn about Absmeier’s paid administrative leave.

Absmeier could not be reached for comment. Calls to the district’s classified department were unreturned. Personnel actions are considered confidential.

Absmeier, who is paid about $80,000 a year, is in charge of the district’s classified employees, including secretaries, custodians and bus drivers.

Absmeier’s duties include testing and certifying the classified staff. He reports to the Personnel Commission, which consists of district- and union-selected members.
