ATLANTA — Influenza has been reported and confirmed in 27 states as flu activity has gradually increased this fall, U.S. federal health officials said Thursday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said only one state, Alaska, reported flu outbreaks during the week ending Dec. 6. Another 21 states and the District of Columbia were reporting sporadic flu activity.
A new Type A(H3N2)/Sydney strain, first detected in Australia and New Zealand in June, has begun to appear in the U.S.
The agency said the new strain might cause outbreaks among those who have been vaccinated.
