Removal of Wolves From Yellowstone

* Re “Judge Strikes Down Wolf-Recovery Effort,” Dec. 13: Bah, humbug! The court’s decision to permit the possible slaughter of wolves is not “an early Christmas present.” Such an act has nothing to do with the true spirit of the season. Once again, the predator that is truly at the top of Earth’s food chain has found the necessary rationale to justify killing.

I don’t think that the Endangered Species Act was ever intended to be a license for humans to kill most members of a species and then to protect the remaining few. Yet, that’s what these decisions appear to be saying. Humans should be capable of finding creative solutions to resolve problems that accompany coexistence. Extermination can’t continue to be solution No. 1.

* If I understand this correctly, a handful of farmers have successfully sued the federal government over what it can and cannot do with federal land. Only wolves who were there prior to the introduction of Canadian wolves can remain and be protected.

I believe the majority of Americans were very proud of what was being done for the wolf and for our ecosystem. Perhaps we should sue to have the farmers remove their herds from our land.
