WHAT THE CAMERA SAW: The Week and More : Reach Out

Life pulses all around, waiting for us to open up to it--to embrace it. Ina Rae Brown leads a prayer before serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless in Long Beach. A homeless woman stretches after washing her clothes in the Los Angeles River flood control channel near Santa Fe Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. And in Ojai, Lucas Sathya begins his day in meditation.

At the Ready

They’re suited up, ready to go. All laced and bowed, several floppy-eared beneficiaries of a basset rescue team get ready to strut their stuff in the Doo Dah Parade. Dressed (or, rather, undressed) for speed, members of the Long Beach State water polo team huddle during a time out in a meet against Pepperdine.

Playtime

Working her muscles (and having fun at the same time), kindergartner Mahlonii Jefferson climbs a jungle gym at Point Fermin Elementary School in San Pedro. Thirteen-year-old Tammy Keyser returns to a childhood pleasure at Mason Recreation Center in Chatsworth. And Chris Bello spreads his wings at a gusty overlook above the Hollywood Bowl.

Precision Timing

Teamwork and precision are key to the efforts of dragon boat racers in Long Beach. The same goes for Metropolitan Transportation Authority officers, who--in one of their last acts together--stand at attention outside Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. In a splitting off of duties, 40% of the 300-plus MTA officers became sheriff’s deputies and the rest joined the LAPD.
