A Nebraska-based optical company recently gave Pierce College’s Ophthalmic Assistant Program an eyeglass lens-making machine that will be used in training student opticians.
The program, which started classes in fall 1996, will begin using the machine, valued at $40,000, in the spring semester.
The gift includes a Sheron 390B Toric Generator, which produces lenses from plastic, and two edging machines that shape and smooth the lenses.
Officials from Elk Optical Co. said the gift was given to encourage students to go into the field.
The yearlong certification program’s classes teach students to measure the parameters of an ophthalmic prescription and fit, align, adjust and repair eyeglasses.
The college will hold an introductory meeting on the program from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 26 in Room 1311 of the Behavioral Science Building, 6201 Winnetka Ave.
