Adolfo Camarillo High is the only county school to be nominated for the nation’s most prestigious academic award this year, state officials have announced.

Adolfo Camarillo, part of the Oxnard Union High School District, is one of 46 middle and high schools to be nominated by the state Department of Education for the national Blue Ribbon award.

Selection of schools for the 15-year-old academic excellence program is based on an intensive self-assessment of eight criteria: student focus and support; challenging standards and curriculum; active teaching and learning; school organization and culture; professional community; leadership and educational vitality; school, family and community partnerships; and indicators of success including student performance on standardized tests.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Education is particularly interested in schools with exemplary programs in arts education and service learning.

Applications will be read in mid-January, and the National Blue Ribbon schools will be announced by the U.S. secretary of education by May 22.
