The El Segundo Unified School District board has named Bill Watkins the district’s permanent superintendent.

Watkins, 58, has been interim superintendent since August, after former Supt. Bill Manahan left the district for a job in the Saddleback Unified School District in Mission Viejo. Watkins was one of five finalists for the superintendent position.

Watkins has spent his 34 years in education in El Segundo. He started as an English teacher and worked for 10 years as principal of El Segundo High School. Watkins was the director of instructional services prior to becoming interim superintendent.

“This is an exciting time in El Segundo as we look to rebuilding our schools and improving our curriculum,” Watkins said. “I’m looking forward to finalizing standards for our core subjects and working with the total community to improve education in the school district.”
