47 Journalists Killed in 1997, Group Says

At least 47 journalists were killed on assignment in 1997, and while fewer reporters died in war zones, more were murdered for their investigative work, an international journalists’ group said. In Latin America, the number of journalists killed tripled in a wave of violence involving political attacks, corrupt politicians and illicit drugs, the Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists said in an annual report.
