Ban on Abortion Procedure Blocked

A federal judge in Trenton has extended an order blocking New Jersey’s ban on a controversial abortion procedure. The Legislature briefly put the ban into effect by overriding Gov. Christine Todd Whitman’s veto on Dec. 15, prompting an immediate appeal from abortion rights supporters. The next day, U.S. District Judge Anne Thompson issued a temporary restraining order that she extended this week, pending a trial June 3.
