Canucks Fight Back to Tie the Stars, 3-3

Brian Noonan’s goal with 10:06 to play completed Vancouver’s rally from a three-goal deficit and earned the Canucks a 3-3 tie with the first-place Stars at Dallas on Saturday night in a game between the Western Conference’s best and worst teams.

Vancouver began chipping away at Dallas’ advantage, closing to 3-1 at 3:07 of the second period on defenseman Chris McAllister’s first NHL goal. Mark Messier’s 13th at 18:04 of the second period narrowed Dallas’ lead to 3-2.

Montreal 1, Pittsburgh 0--Andy Moog stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Canadiens edged the Penguins at Pittsburgh. Scott Thornton scored in the first period as the Canadiens ended a six-game road losing streak. Moog got his 27th career shutout and the Canadiens improved to 18-0-2 when leading after two periods.

Carolina 4, Buffalo 1--Defenseman Steve Chiasson scored his third goal in four games as the Hurricanes took advantage of Buffalo backup goaltender Steve Shields and defeated the Sabres at Greensboro, N.C.

Florida 6, N.Y. Islanders 2--Radek Dvorak’s two goals triggered a five-goal outburst in the second period at Uniondale, N.Y., where the Panthers rolled over the Islanders. Tom Fitzgerald scored one of his two goals in the period, and Steve Washburn and Ray Sheppard also scored for Florida.

Ottawa 3, Washington 0--Ron Tugnutt made 31 saves at Washington for his second shutout of the season and the seventh of his career as the Senators beat the Capitals for the sixth consecutive time. Alexandre Daigle, Andreas Dackell and Derek Armstrong scored.

Boston 3 Tampa Bay 1--Steve Heinze scored twice and back-up goaltender Rob Tallas stopped 24 shots at Tampa as the Bruins ended a four-game winless skid by beating the Lightning. Center Dimitri Khristich contributed three assists, helping the Bruins end Tampa Bay’s franchise-tying, eight-game home undefeated streak.

Detroit 8, Toronto 1--Kirk Maltby had the first three-goal game of his career, leading the streaking Red Wings to a lopsided victory at Toronto in front of a Maple Leaf Gardens crowd of 15,700 that was booing the home team by game’s end.

Colorado 5, Edmonton 1--The Avalanche extended its unbeaten streak over the Oilers to 12 games thanks to goals at Edmonton from Valeri Kamensky, Eric Lacroix, Alexei Gusarov, Peter Forsberg and Jeff Odgers. Colorado is 11-0-1 against Edmonton since Dec. 7, 1995.

Calgary 5, Philadelphia 2--Goaltender Roloson picked up his first victory of the season, making 25 saves as the Flames skated past the Flyers at Calgary.
