Esperanza Builds Early Lead, Beats Millikan to Win Title

Kim Omer had two three-pointers in the first quarter as Esperanza built a 14-point lead and went on to defeat Long Beach Millikan, 65-43, Tuesday in the championship game of the Cerritos Gahr tournament.

Omer finished with 15 points and seven assists and Leah Combs contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for the third-ranked Aztecs (8-5).

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Diamond Bar 57, No. 4 Capistrano Valley 50--Leah Wilde scored 15 points as Capistrano Valley lost the championship game to Diamond Bar, ranked 10th in the state.

Monique Mathews scored 13 points for the Cougars (10-3).

Laguna Hills 62, Artesia 45--Erin Larsen scored 10 points, had 16 rebounds and eight assists in the consolation victory for Laguna Hills. Laguna Hills led by only three at the end of the third quarter, but outscored Artesia, 24-10, in the fourth. Ann Bubriski led Laguna Hills with 16 points.

In the Garden Grove tournament:

Los Alamitos 43, Garden Grove 31--Kristen Geoffroy scored a game-high 18 points to help Los Alamitos (8-5) advance to the championship game. Katie Werdel scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, for tournament host Garden Grove (7-6).

In the Laguna Beach tournament:

Irvine 52, Dana Hills 39--Lauren O’Hara scored 15 points and tournament MVP Stacy Morita added 13 as Irvine opened an 18-5, first-quarter lead en route to the tournament championship.

Mission Viejo 44, Orange Lutheran 37--Lindsay Huie scored 24 points to lead Mission Viejo (6-5) in the third-place game.

In the Santiago tournament:

Los Amigos 39, Saddleback 37--After going winless last season, Los Amigos (1-6) won after Maria Elias made a steal and layup with four seconds remaining to break a 37-37 tie in pool play. Elias scored 15 points for the Lobos (1-6), who finished 0-22 last season and 4-15 in ‘95-’96.

In the Savanna tournament:

Cypress 60, Redondo Beach 48--Lyndsay Weaver scored 14 points in a second-round victory for Cypress (7-4). Jennifer Laster had seven points and 12 points for Cypress.

Calvary Chapel 58, Valencia 48--Christy Ring had a game-high 19 points and Cathy Joens added 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Calvary Chapel (10-2) in the quarterfinal game. Heather Hoppe led Valencia with 17 points.
