A commemoration of the city’s 70th anniversary will top the agenda Tuesday night as former city leaders join the current City Council for a look back over the last seven decades.

More than 20 former elected officials have been invited to participate in the celebration, which will include a slide show titled “Laguna Then and Now.” The city’s Heritage Committee will discuss its achievements and goals, and the Laguna Beach Historical Society will decorate the council chambers with old photographs of the city.

In addition, the council is expected to adopt a resolution that includes highlights of what it was like to be living in Laguna Beach on June 29, 1927, when the city was incorporated with a population of 1,900.

The city now has about 24,000 residents.

According to the commemorative statement, the earliest official orders of the first police chief, Abe Johnson, included an edict that autos must travel no faster than 15 mph. No one paid property taxes, but palmists and clairvoyants paid business license fees of $5 per day.

Two local businesses, Laguna Beach Lumber Co. and the White House Restaurant, were successful then as they are today, the resolution says.

The presentation will begin at 6 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave. Information: 497-0705.
