Ally to Councilman Picked for Rose Bowl Board

Pasadena attorney Edward Garlock will join the board of the Rose Bowl Operating Co. today after being selected by new City Councilman Sidney Tyler.

Garlock, who oversaw Tyler’s successful run for council this year, will represent District 7 on the nine-member board of the city-owned stadium.

Tyler won election in May to the District 7 council seat vacated by William E. Thomson Jr. after 16 years on the council. He removed most of his predecessor’s city appointees, saying he wanted his own people in those positions.

Thomson, who appointed himself to the Rose Bowl board before leaving the council, said he expressed a desire to stay on the panel but was rebuffed by Tyler.

“It’s just very small, petty politics,” Thomson said. The former councilman backed a candidate other than Tyler to succeed him.

Thomson was a key player in negotiations to host several Super Bowls, the World Cup and other events, Pasadena officials said.
