Here’s a sampling of writing workshops for children this summer:

* L.A. Youth, 6030 Wilshire Blvd. (at Fairfax), Suite 201, Los Angeles. This newspaper by and about teens is offering two workshops for youths ages 15-19. “A Writer’s Workshop,” July 8-18, Tuesdays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. to teach interviewing, research and Internet skills, including designing a Web page; and “An Artist’s and Designer’s Workshop,” July 29-Aug. 8, Tuesdays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., for students interested in newspaper graphic design. * The Junior Arts Center, Barnsdall Park, 4814 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, is offering two eight-week courses, both beginning next week. “Writing From Art” is designed for children ages 9-12 who are just starting to explore self-expression through words. Class meets Tuesdays from 12:30-2 p.m. Fee: $30. For more experienced wordsmiths, “The Writer’s Toolbox: Teen Fiction Workshop.” Students (12 and up) will explore narrative technique, character development, story structure, point of view, voice, dialogue and monologue. * Los Angeles Mission College is offering writing courses for children as part of its Community Extension Program. “Creative Writing for Kids,” for first- and second-graders, begins July 14 with six Monday classes, 5:30-6:30 p.m. A separate class for third- and fourth-graders will meet at the same time. For fifth- and six-graders, a creative writing class will meet six Wednesdays beginning July 9 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Fee for any of the three: $39, plus $6 materials fee. Also offered, “Action Comics for Kids,” in which students create their own comic books and superheroes. Meets four Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Fee: $29, plus $10 materials fee. * AnyBody’s Earth Press, 230 E. 17th St., Suite 218, Costa Mesa, is offering “Anybody Can Get Published and Have Fun,” ongoing six-week sessions that meet Sundays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and/or Mondays from 7-9:30 p.m. Students may start their six weeks at any time. Students create story boards in which they plot out past experiences. They also learn specifics of marketing and copyright laws. For children and adults ages 5 and up, $60. Call (714) 646-1128.

* ABC Writing Buddies, Children’s Room, Glendale Public Library, 222 E. Harvard St., Glendale. Members of the Hoover High School Writing Club will lead writing workshops for children ages 8-12 on three Saturdays, July 12, 19 and 26, from 3:30-5 p.m. Free. Call (818) 548-2035.
