D.A. Investigator to Receive State Award

Ventura district attorney senior investigator Richard Haas was honored with the Joseph P. McClure Investigator of the Year Award for 1997. The Board of Directors of the California District Attorney Investigators’ Assn. will formally present the award to Haas at an annual conference in September. Haas, 53, started with the Ventura Police Department in 1967 as a police officer. He joined the district attorney’s office as a criminal investigator in 1980 and now supervises the Major Crimes/Trial Preparation Unit.

2 8th-Graders Selected for Scholarships * Two eighth-grade students at St. Mary Magdalen School in Camarillo received $1,000 scholarships sponsored by the Adolfo Camarillo Council No. 5272 of the Knights of Columbus. Daniel Salinas and Deborah Echeveste were winners of an essay contest titled, “Why a Catholic School Is My Choice for a High School Education.” Both students will use the scholarships to attend St. Bonaventure High School.

2 Ventura Residents Win Shuffleboard Title * Two Ventura residents won the gold medal in mixed doubles shuffleboard competition at the 1997 U.S. National Senior Sports Classic in Tucson, Ariz. William Scott, 70, and Wilma Redard, 76, defeated competitors ages 70 and older from the U.S., Canada, Germany and Australia at the Olympic-style event.

4 Students Win UCLA Alumni Prizes * Four junior college students from Ventura County were awarded a UCLA Alumni Assn.’s Community College Transfer Scholarship. The winners are Peter Pelligrini and Allison Sturges, both of Ventura College; Joon Me Hyung and Tony Tamacheepjaroen, both of Moorpark College. The honor includes a monetary award, plus bonuses in the form of registration, housing and parking preferences. Recipients are evaluated on their high school and college academic records, athletic activities, leadership skills and community involvement.
