In a case strikingly similar to the celebrated Lorena Bobbitt incident four years ago, an 18-year-old woman was accused of cutting off her boyfriend’s penis after he allegedly beat her during a drunken rage, police said.

The man, identified in local press reports as Julio Luna, 20, was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Police said the woman, Daisy Palma Mascada, was arrested on suspicion of spousal battery, mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said they found the man with his penis cut off when they responded Thursday to an emergency call from a home in Seaside, 100 miles south of San Francisco.

Mascada, Luna’s live-in girlfriend, told police he had beaten her in a drunken rage and that she had cut off his penis with a serrated butcher’s knife after he passed out.

Luna was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery to reattach the severed organ. Hospital officials declined to release information about him.

Seaside police said Mascada was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries and later was booked into Monterey County Jail.

In 1993, Lorena Bobbitt cut off the penis of her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, with a kitchen knife as he slept in the bedroom of their Virginia home. Surgeons reattached the organ.

Tried on a charge of malicious wounding, Lorena Bobbitt said she acted out of an “irresistible impulse” after her husband allegedly raped her after four years of beatings, sexual assaults and verbal abuse.

Her husband denied the abuse. A Virginia jury found her not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.
