Weekend sailors and landlubbers alike can load up on seafaring knowledge with a special course at the U.S. Coast Guard center at Channel Islands Harbor starting July 15.
The classes in “Boating Skills & Seamanship” will be taught by experienced local sailors and powerboat skippers who are also trained and certified as inspectors for the Coast Guard auxiliary.
The course teaches power-boating and sailing theory, seamanship techniques, legal responsibility, boat handling, safety, the latest federal boating regulations and “the rules of the road” for navigating Ventura County’s coastal waters.
Students can also learn about “reading the weather” to predict storms, safe use of boat trailers, radio communications, emergency procedures and first aid.
The classes will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for 13 consecutive Tuesdays beginning July 15 at 4202 S. Victoria Ave., Oxnard. The classes are free, and optional text and educational tools are available for a nominal fee. Call John or Zane White at 483-0534 for details.
