This North Woods community, known as the “icebox of the nation,” felt the chill of winter Monday, even though the calendar showed it was summer.

The low of 34 degrees at 5:17 a.m. local time set a record for the date, which the National Weather Service attributed to a not-unusual blast of Arctic air.

It was even colder in Tower, Minn., which hit a low of 24 degrees.
