The Show Is Over

Demolition of Orange County’s last remaining drive-in movie theater, Hi-way 39, continued Thursday to make way for a Wal-Mart shopping plaza.

The theater, built in the 1950s, was remodeled in 1979 and had four movie screens at the height of its success. It was owned by Pacific Theaters Realty Corp., which is the developer of the Wal-Mart project.

The plaza, on 25 acres bounded by the Garden Grove Freeway on the north and Beach Boulevard (California 39) on the east, will have two other major retailers and five smaller shops or restaurants.
