A Cool Week for Science

Share

Come in, space shuttle Columbia, Oxnard High School calling!

Lined up on the school auditorium stage Wednesday morning were nine members of the Four Square Radio Amateur Youth group, poised to pose questions to astronaut commander James Halsell Jr. as the shuttle orbited far overhead.

Just one more amazing moment in a busy week in space.

While the guys aboard the space station Mir waited for their spare parts to show up from the factory and NASA’s cute little skateboard Sojourner planted kisses on rocks on Mars, it seemed like an appropriate moment to ask:

Is science cool or what?

“We’ve been working on this for like two years and the opportunity finally came through,” said Jennifer Fleischer, 17, whose dad founded the ham radio club. Her friend Tiffony Cho, 16, agreed that it was exciting to get such a personal contact with the space program.

Said Oxnard High School Principal Daisy Tatum: “I think this is an experience these young people will remember forever.”

And of such moments stars--or star explorers--are born.
