Violent Fare’s Popularity

In the last several weeks, action-packed films such as “Batman & Robin,” “Con Air” and “The Lost World” have hit No. 1 in the box office. Recently, the violent film “Face/Off” beat out Disney’s family-oriented “Hercules.” Meanwhile, the Tyson-Holyfield fight drew in a record 1.9 million pay-per-view buys.
Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) believes that television’s declining standards have contributed to the erosion of family values (“TV Needs Self-Restraint, Not Censorship,” Counterpunch, June 30).
He says it is his right to get the industry’s attention and persuade them to listen to the public’s growing ire.
Well, he’s right. By the ticket sales and pay-per-view subscriptions this past week, it seems as though the public has spoken, and the industry is definitely going to be listening.
