Mormons to Mark 150th Anniversary

Share

In honor of the 150th anniversary of its founding, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a day of celebration and community service Saturday in Simi Valley.

The event is designed to remember the pioneers who entered the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847.

The celebration will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. at 5028 Cochran St.

There, church members will demonstrate how Brigham Young and the Utah pioneers lived and survived. Also, there will be games, as well as food and drinks.

Church wards worldwide will each perform 150 hours of community service to commemorate the church’s sesquicentennial. The nine wards in Simi Valley will plant trees and pick up trash at Rancho Simi Park, work on the Chumash Trail and hand out information on dealing with graffiti.

Local church members also will clean the arroyo from Madera Road to Sequoia Avenue, and provide personal care, yard and building maintenance at a local convalescent hospital.

For more information on the anniversary celebration, or the community service projects, call H. Lawrence Fick at 583-5217.
