Psychologist Richard Reinhart, who lost his job with the county’s Behavioral Health Department in a recent round of budget cuts, plans to return to full-time private practice, county officials announced.

Reinhart, once a co-host of a local radio talk show called “Thoughts and Feelings,” had served as chief psychologist for the department since 1972.

His half-time position paid $60,846 in salary and benefits, county officials said. His last day with the county was Saturday, and he will return to full-time private practice Aug. 1, county officials said.

As chief psychologist for the county, Reinhart worked with schools, colleges and community groups on mental health issues, helped form a department of psychology within the Ventura County Medical Center and helped train medical staff.

Prior to coming to the county, Reinhart served as chief psychologist at Tompkins County Mental Health Center in Ithaca, N.Y., and as a visiting professor at Cornell University.
