Street Being Renamed to Honor ‘Mr. Cypress’
The city this month will rename a portion of Mildred Circle as Kanel Circle in honor of former City Council member John Kanel.
Known as Mr. Cypress, Kanel, 67, lives on the street and is expected to attend the renaming ceremony July 25.
He served on the council from 1964 to 1976 and from 1982 to 1990--a combined tenure that is longer than that of anyone else in city history, officials said. Kanel was mayor three times: in 1970-71, 1984-85 and 1986-87.
During his time in office, he was credited with spearheading many of the developments and policies that brought Cypress the commercial development and planned suburban subdivisions that characterize the city today.
“Twenty years on the council, he made thousands of decisions that form the city as we see it now,” current Mayor Tom Carroll said.
The ceremony will be at 9 a.m. on the 5500 block of Mildred Circle--the section being renamed. Former and current city officials are expected to attend the event, which is open to the public.
