Neighbors Buying School New Books
When students return to Newport Elementary School this fall, there will be at least 200 new books in the library, thanks to a donation from their neighbors.
“I just thought it would be a great community project,” said David Schonholtz, a Marina Park resident who organized the book drive.
Schonholtz said he got the idea after reading a newspaper report in which Principal Bill Knight said he would like to have more money for library books.
The school has a reading incentive program that often depletes the library of the most popular volumes.
On average, Newport Elementary students read 130 books each year, Knight said, and 95% of them read outside of school hours.
By asking for small donations from the residents, Schonholtz raised $2,400 for the school.
“These things really help,” Knight said of the community project.
