Footsteps in the sand show where a 16-year-old straight-A student walked alone into a reservoir and drowned after saying goodbye to the boyfriend that her parents demanded she leave, police said.

“We have no evidence of anything but [a suicide],” San Mateo Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Boss said of Dyung Khanh Vu, whose body was found in Crystal Springs Reservoir on Sunday. “There is no evidence of foul play. She was upset, despondent about the breakup with her boyfriend.”

Only one set of footprints led from the trail, where Vu apparently left her bicycle and college textbooks, and there was no evidence of trauma to her body, Boss said. The footprints matched shoes she wore.

Vu, a straight-A junior at Terra Nova High School in Pacifica who was attending summer classes at Skyline Community College, was reported missing by her parents Thursday.

Boss said Monday that Vu had apparently been despondent because her parents had asked her to break up with her new boyfriend, a San Francisco man whom she met on the Internet about three weeks ago and later saw in person at Skyline.

“They were very strict with her,” Boss said.

“We are all just devastated,” said Khanh Vu, the girl’s father. “I don’t know what to say. I can’t believe I lost my daughter, our lovely daughter.”
